Breaking: Second self-immolation in 24 hours, Toll rises to 111 (Updated)

DHARAMSHALA, March 25: Within 24 hours of Kal Kyi’s self-immolation in Zamthang, another Tibetan has set himself on fire today in an apparent protest against China’s continuing occupation of Tibet.
Forty-three-old Lhamo Kyab set himself ablaze in a forest in Sangchu County in Amdo, Eastern Tibet. The self-immolation took place around 10 pm (local time). He died in his fiery protest.
According to our sources in exile, Lhamo Kyab set himself in a forest where he works as a forest guard.
“Early morning, he doused himself in kerosene and jumped into a fire which he started with timber wood,” said the same source, who did not want to be named.
Following his self-immolation protest, a large number of armed security personnel arrived at the location and the situation in the region is described as tense “under strict surveillance”.
Kyab’s self-immolation is the second such case in one a day. Thirty-year-old Kal Kyi, a mother of four has set herself ablaze on 24 March in Eastern Tibet at 3:30 pm (local time). She died at the protest site.

Seconda immolazione per il Tibet in 24 ore. Secondo fonti della diaspora tibetana, oggi un uomo di 43 anni si e’ dato oggi alle fiamme nella provincia del Gansu. Lhamo Kyab ha compiuto il gesto di protesta intorno alle 10 di stamattina nel villaggio di Lushoe nella zona di Tsoe (Hezuo per i cinesi) dove si erano gia’ immolate altre 5 persone. Non si conoscono le sue condizioni. Quella di Kyab e’ la centoundicesima immolazione dal febbraio 2009, da quando sono cominciate, e la quindicesima dall’inizio dell’anno. E’ avvenuta a meno di 24 ore di distanza da quella di Kal Kyi, una donna di 31 anni, madre di quattro bambini.
111° IMMOLAZIONE IN TIBET. APPELLO DI DUE ONG TIBETANE AI PAESI DEL BRICS
Dharamsala, 25 marzo 2013. A meno di 24 ore dalla tragica autoimmolazione di una madre tibetana, un altro caso di suicidio con il fuoco ha avuto luogo oggi nel villaggio di Lushoe, nella regione di Tsoe. Lhamo Kyab, quarantuno anni, si è auto immolato attorno alle ore 10.00, ora locale. E’ il 5° caso di immolazione avvenuto nella regione di Tsoe, l’ultimo era avvenuto il 6 ottobre dello scorso anno con la morte di Sangay Gyatso.
Ieri è stata la volta di Kal Kyi, trent’anni, madre di quattro figli, che si è autoimmolata nei pressi del monastero Jonang, nel Tibet orientale. Secondo una fonte anonima della contea di Dzamthang, la donna si è uccisa "per sottolineare la violenta politica cinese in Tibet". Più volte le autorità tibetane in esilio - politiche e religiose - hanno chiesto al governo centrale cinese di aprire un tavolo per gestire la situazione. Pechino ha preferito fino a ora emanare invece nuovi regolamenti che minacciano l'arresto immediato "per chi si autoimmola e per chi incita gli altri a farlo".
Di fronte al dilagare della protesta e al pugno di ferro di Pechino, due organizzazioni tibetane in esilio, Students for a Free Tibet-India e l’Associazione delle Donne Tibetane hanno indirizzato a Xi Jinping, il neo eletto presidente cinese, un comunicato stampa congiunto nel quale si chiedono alla Cina azioni concrete volte a dare una risposta alle legittime richieste del popolo tibetano e a rendere possibile la cessazione dell’inarrestabile ondata di autoimmolazioni. Xi Jinping partecipa per la prima volta alla riunione dei paesi emergenti (BRICS), in corso a Durban.
Le due ONG tibetane hanno inoltre inviato una lettera aperta alle ambasciate indiane degli altri paesi emergenti (Brasile, Russia, India, e Sud Africa) e a Primo Ministro indiano chiedendo loro di chiedere a Xi di porre fine alla brutale repressione in atto in Tibet e di consentire all’Alto Commissario ONU per i Diritti Umani di visitare il paese.

Tibet : 4,000 tibetans gathered in Ngaba

Over 4,000 Tibetans, including monks of Jonang Monastery, had gathered to express solidarity with the deceased Tibetan.Kalkyi, 30, who left behind a husband and three sons and a daughter, all under 15 years of age, self-immolated near the Jonang monastery in Dzamthang county and local Tibetans immediately took her body into the monastery before Chinese security forces arrived.The Chinese authorities had warned the Tibetans that they would take the body by force if they did not cremate it before midnight.
As readers may realize obtaining information from occupied Tibet is challenging, yet despite the oppression and real dangers of torture and forced labor Tibetans take such risks to inform the world of their suffering under China’s tyranny. With such material there can be delays, misunderstanding of translations, repetition or sometimes conflicting detail, particularly when reported by any number of Tibet related organizations, or sympathetic individuals. This can result in inaccuracies or confusion, hardly surprising given the circumstances and that Tibet is effectively under military lock-down 24/7. Like others we are not immune from such error and recently we were asked by a Tibetan friend about figures appearing on our map of self-immolations inside Tibet, which he suggested may need to be revised. We happily took his thoughts on board and have been busy over the weekend examining the various conflicting sources and comparing the totals, which do vary with some organizations.
Having checked back reportage of self-immolations in occupied Tibet to March 2011 and correlating those totals with Dossier Tibet and Rangzen Alliance, two sources who we have great respect for in terms of accuracy and quality of reports, we are revising the total of reported self-immolations in Tibet to 121 (this includes the Tibetan self-immolation by Tapey during 1989) for such protests up to March 25, 2013.
